SHELTON, CT — On Friday night, local firefighters responded to 1001 Bridgeport Ave. for a report of a vehicle that had struck a building and the occupant was pinned in the car.

"Upon arrival, it was confirmed that a vehicle had struck a building compromising a staircase to apartments above and the occupant of the vehicle was trapped inside," fire officials said. "Members of Rescue 30, Squad 1 and Engine 24 placed several stabilization struts to reinforce the stairs. Once the stairs were secure, a grip hoist was used to pull the vehicle from under the stairs."

"As soon as the vehicle was removed, hydraulic rescue tools were used to remove the door of the vehicle to free the occupant," fire officials added. "Once removed, EHAC transported the occupants to a local trauma facility for evaluation. Approximately 25 members under the command of Assistant Chief Joe Constantino operated for approximately 45 minutes to free the occupant. The City Building Inspector was on scene and deemed the upper apartment was not habitable due to the condition of the stairs."
