DERBY, CT — The Derby Board of Education recently received dual recognitions from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education.

According to a news release provided by Derby Public Schools, the awards underscore the board's commitment to exemplary educational leadership and effective communication with the community.

CABE honored the board with both the CABE Board Leadership Award and the Bonnie B. Carney Award for Excellence in Educational Communications at the CABE/CAPSS Annual Convention on Nov. 15.

The CABE Board Leadership Award acknowledges boards that exemplify teamwork, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to student achievement and community engagement.

The Derby Board of Education demonstrated exceptional leadership by meeting rigorous criteria across 34 items spanning leadership, student achievement, policy and community relations, according to the school district.

Superintendent Matthew Conway Jr. expressed pride in the board's dedication, noting that its recent accomplishments include an inclusive strategic planning process, a steadfast focus on school safety, and a commitment to supporting educators through a tailored coaching model.

"This distinction reaffirms our commitment to fostering an environment where students and staff are supported in every way possible," Board Chairman Jim Gildea said in a news release. "Our board is composed of volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time and expertise, making this recognition truly meaningful."

In addition to the leadership award, the Derby Board of Education was also recognized with the Bonnie B. Carney Award for Excellence in Educational Communications, which celebrates the district's commitment to transparent and effective communication with parents, students and the community at large, according to the district.

The board received accolades for the Derby High School Student Handbook 2023-2024, a critical resource for families and students, created under the leadership of Principal Jennifer Olson and Assistant Principal Ray Coplin.

The handbook outlines essential policies, expectations, and guidelines that support student success, according to the district.

The board was also awarded honorable mentions for the Derby Public Schools Strategic Plan and the inaugural Board of Education Community Newsletter, developed by the School/Community Relations and Policy Committee.

These communications initiatives reflect the board’s dedication to fostering a strong, informed community through transparent updates on goals, achievements, and plans, according to the district.
