His leadership and dedication made this cultural and educational opportunity possible, and it reflects his deep investment in student growth beyond the classroom, district officials said.

"I think most people enjoy recognition; it terrifies me," Sigona said in a news release. "Please do not misunderstand me: I am deeply grateful for this honor, being recognized for what I do consider to be some good, honest work—I have just never been good at being the center of attention. That said, since the recognition has come my way, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the community who have seen fit to bestow this very gracious award on me. Any success I have achieved is largely in part to the Administration who allows me the opportunities to do my work, wonderful colleagues with whom I share a building, and the students with whom I share a classroom every single day. I miei più profondi ringraziamenti a tutti...my deepest thanks to all."

James Piazza, vice president of the Derby Educator Association, said Sigona is more than deserving of the honor of both DHS and District Teacher of the Year.

"Students rave about his helpfulness and the strong connections he builds," Piazza said in a news release. "As staff trickle out for the day, you can count on seeing students still in Mr. Sigona's classroom getting the support they need—he stays until they understand. He immerses them in language and culture through activities and by literally taking them to Italy. As a colleague, I value his professionalism, dedication and contributions beyond the classroom, including his involvement in PDEC. Derby is lucky to have him."

Superintendent Matthew Conway praised Sigona.

"Signore Sigona is the kind of educator who brings both passion and purpose to everything he does," Conway said in a news release. "He creates a classroom environment where students feel supported and inspired to reach their full potential. He sets high expectations and provides the support students need to meet them. Whether through engaging lessons or meaningful connections beyond the curriculum, Mr. Sigona exemplifies the kind of teacher every student deserves. Dual-certified in Italian and Music, Mr. Sigona also lends his talents to the school’s music program—volunteering to conduct performances and performing alongside students in the orchestra. His enthusiasm and energy elevate both academic and extracurricular experiences."

Derby High School Principal Jennifer Olson added Sigona is a beloved member of the DHS faculty.

"His enthusiasm is contagious, and his commitment to authentic learning is unmatched," Olson said in a news release. "Whether he’s planning a trip abroad or staying late to support a student club, Hunter leads with heart and excellence. We are incredibly proud of him."
