Derby Public Schools Names 2026 District Paraeducator Of The Year

District officials announced a Derby Middle School employee has been selected as the 2026 District Paraeducator of the Year.

DERBY, CT — Derby Public Schools recently announced Alyssa Saint-Vilien, a paraeducator at Derby Middle School, has been selected as the 2026 District Paraeducator of the Year.

According to a news release provided by the district, Saint-Vilien is widely recognized by her colleagues as an exceptional paraeducator whose warmth and unwavering dedication extend well beyond the students she is assigned to support.

Her daily presence at Derby Middle School radiates kindness, patience, and professionalism, making her an irreplaceable asset to the entire school community, according to the district.

"Her positive energy inspires those around her, and she serves as a role model for fellow paraeducators and staff alike," the release reads.

The Connecticut State Department of Education and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council established the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year Program to recognize the critical role of paraeducators in supporting student achievement, according to the district.

The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a paraeducator who tragically lost her life in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, district officials said.

Reflecting on her work, Saint-Vilien shared one of her favorite quotes by Mahatma Gandhi: "Be the change that you wish to see in the world."

Rachael Caggiano, principal of Derby Middle School, praised Saint-Vilien's contributions.

"Ms. Alyssa Saint-Vilien exemplifies the dedication, compassion, and excellence we strive for at Derby Middle School and throughout Derby Public Schools," Caggiano said in a news release. "Her unwavering support for students, collaborative spirit, and commitment to creating a positive learning environment make her truly deserving of this recognition. We are proud to have Alyssa as part of our school community and deeply grateful for the impact she makes every single day."

Brigitta Abakumova, supervisor of secondary special education, said it was "with great pride and deep appreciation" that the district recognizes Saint-Vilien as the Derby Middle School Paraeducator of the Year.

"[Saint-Vilien] exemplifies what it means to support students with compassion, skill, and dedication," Abakumova said in a news release. "Alyssa approaches every task with professionalism and heart, often anticipating student needs before they're even spoken. Her work reflects a deep understanding of equity, dignity, and inclusion. Her contributions to the Comprehensive Learning Center are both essential and immeasurable. With her calm, nurturing presence, she creates a safe and structured environment for students and serves as a source of inspiration for the entire team. Alyssa is a role model for all. Her impact is lasting, and her presence is vital."

Superintendent Matthew Conway Jr. said Saint-Vilien exemplifies the very best of what it means to support students with compassion, consistency, and care.

"She brings a calm presence and steadfast commitment to her work each day, helping students feel

valued, capable, and empowered to succeed—both academically and emotionally," Conway said in a news release. "Whether working one-on-one or in small groups, Ms. Saint-Vilien builds trusting relationships that foster growth and confidence. A true team player, she goes above and beyond for students and colleagues alike. Her quiet impact is profound—reflected in the progress of her students and the deep respect she has earned districtwide."

Board of Education Chairman Jim Gildea said the board was thrilled to honor Saint-Vilien and celebrate the extraordinary efforts that earned her this recognition.

"We also commend the outstanding contributions of all our individual school honorees," Gildea said in a news release. "Their dedication to fostering inclusive, supportive learning environments ensures every student has the opportunity to thrive. We are grateful for their compassion, commitment, and the difference they make every day."

The district also extended its heartfelt thanks to the 2026 School-Level Paraeducators of the Year: Ms. Shelbie Taylor (Little Raiders University), Ms. Sibel Arslan (Bradley School), Ms. Alyssa Vaquero (Irving School), Ms. Anna Hustek (Derby High School).

"Each of these outstanding individuals models what it means to make a meaningful, lasting impact on students and create a positive environment for all who have the privilege to work with them," the release reads.
