Fire & Ice: White Hills Co. 5 Rescue Drill [Video]
Shelton firefighters braced the Sunday morning cold to participate in an ice rescue drill.
The White Hills Fire Company 5 held an ice rescue drill this past Sunday, Jan. 27 at a pond on Birdseye Road. Training Officer Mike Kellett donned a hefty red immersion suit and chopped a hole in the pond where he bobbed for about two hours while fellow officers practiced various methods of rescue: self-extrication, sling and sled.
While White Hills is the only fire company in the city to have rescue sleds for ice situations, members from each department were present to participate in the drill.
"Each department brings something more to the table," Kellett said.
