Former Beechwood Supermarket to be Reborn

The owner of Hamden's Thyme and Season Natural Food Market is foraying into Huntington Center.

The former Beechwood Supermarket is being "gutted" to become "Common Bond," which will carry many of the same products as Beechwood, which closed this summer, said Josh Elliott, whose mother owns Thyme & Season Natural Food Mart in Hamden.

"We're very excited," said Elliott.

The Thyme and Season store, which is about 17 years old, is about 5,000 square feet while the former Beechwood building is 6,500 square feet. Elliott said the family has a vision for the increased space, including a deli. The store will also serve hot and ready-to-eat meals.

With the venture, Elliott said he and his family hope to establish a new anchor store in Huntington Center. The landlord will also be making renovations to the market's exterior. The location was recommended by a local realtor, according to Elliott.

Elliott said the secret to his family's success is paying attention to customers' needs and ideas. He added that the family is aiming for a February 2014 opening.

Meanwhile, Elliott said several former Beechwood customers have already approached him and offered their support.

The reuse of Beechwood comes on the heels of the Sassafras Diner re-opening in late October after an electrical fire seriously damaged it in June 2012.
