SHELTON-DERBY, CT — Independence Day is fast approaching so it's time to find out where you can celebrate in and around Shelton and Derby. Area events include fireworks, festivals and other Fourth of July fun.

Shelton, Derby July 4th Fireworks 2024
What: Shelton and Derby's 4th of July fireworks celebration.

Where: Veterans Memorial Park on Canal Street in Shelton.
When: July 3; fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:20 p.m., with music by Darik & the Funbags scheduled to start at 7 p.m. prior to the big event. A rain date is scheduled for July 5.
What: Enjoy a two-day, fun-filled family event with food, vendors, carnival rides and games, children's entertainment, music fireworks and more, closing with a fabulous fireworks display on the second night.
Where: Trumbull Day festivities will be held on the field behind Hillcrest Middle School (530 Daniels Farm Road, Trumbull). Fireworks will be held at Trumbull High School.
When: Trumbull Day festivities begin Friday, June 28 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday, June 29 from 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; fireworks will start at dusk about 45 minutes after sunset, likely at 9 p.m., however there is no set time.

Reading of the Declaration of Independence
What: The town invites the community to its annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. Weather permitting, the historic portrayal will be held outdoors featuring members of the We The People Team and citizen volunteers reading the Declaration. The Trumbull High School Chamber Choir will join the event for patriotic harmonizing while Trumbull Scouts will be present flags. After the reading, please stay for crafts thanks to The Trumbull Historical Society and Trumbull Girl Scouts, followed by story hour at the gazebo. For comfort, feel free to bring a chair.
Where: The front steps of Town Hall (5866 Main Street, Trumbull).

Stratford Fireworks

When: Tuesday, July 2; rain date Friday, July 5.

Today, Americans celebrate the birth of a new nation with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues. Celebrations, though, predate by centuries the designation of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which didn’t happen until 1941.
During the pivotal summer of 1776, the pre-Revolutionary celebrations honoring King George III’s birthday were replaced with mock funerals as a symbolic break from the crown.
It was an exciting time in Philadelphia — the Continental Congress voted to break from the crown and, two days later on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the original 13 colonies —New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia — to adopt the Declaration of Independence.
The first annual commemoration of the nation’s independence was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, while the Revolutionary War was ongoing. Fireworks have been part of Fourth of July festivities since the first celebration in Philadelphia.
