Obituary: Woon Wai Wong, 82, of Shelton

SHELTON, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) Woon Wai Wong, 82, of Shelton, passed away peacefully June 30, 2022 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Woon Wai was born in Canton, China on October 7, 1939, a son of the late King Yee Wong and Sum Hai Ma.

At the age of 12, he left mainland China to reside in Hong Kong with hopes of having a better future. While in Hong Kong, he learned the skills of tailoring, which ultimately became his lifelong career.

In 1960, he met his beloved wife, Chai Oi, and married to have two sons, Dennis and Barry. He worked diligently to support his family. Apart from Chinese New Years, Woon Wai never took a day off.

He kept an energetic demeanor as he raised his children and supported his family back in China. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching horse races and betting on the winners. In 1981, Woon Wai and his family immigrated to the United States in hopes of better opportunities.

Initially, he worked in a restaurant but then went back to his original career of tailoring. Woon Wai was a responsible and skilled worker, specializing in men’s fashion at Syms Department Store.

Upon retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, always ready for a trip to restaurants, whether it be for dim sum, Italian food, or IHOP. Woon Wai was also a frequent visitor and lover of McDonald's, where he would order a cup of coffee and a burger with his wife. He lived a long and prosperous life, having survived cancer in 2011.

Woon Wai will be greatly missed and is survived by his wife, Chai Oi; his sons, Dennis and his wife, Eileen, of Wallingford and Barry and his wife, Yuk Sim, of Derby; his three brothers and four sisters, of California and China; his granddaughter, Melissa and her husband, Bradford.

Woon Wai is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; along with a host of loving family and friends. He was a loyal husband, a responsible father to all his children and a doting grandfather to his granddaughter.\

Woon Wai's family will receive relatives and friends at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext. on Thursday, July 7, 2022 from 8 am to 9:30 am. Inurnment will be announced at a later date at Mount St. Peter Cemetery in Derby, Connecticut.
