Board of Education Member

What town do you live in?

Party Affiliation:

Registered Democrat

Occupation:

Retired from Public Education (34 years).

Family:

I have three children who were raised and thrived in the Shelton community. All are college graduates, two hold doctorate degrees, (Ph.D. and Juris Doctorate). My children have professional careers and are busy raising my seven grandchildren. I also have one sister who worked in public education for 24 years, and two nephews who are public school teachers.

Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?

None of my family members work in politics or government.

Previous public office, appointive or elective:

I have not held a public office.

Why are you seeking this office?

I have been a resident of Shelton for 42 years. I have 34 years in education, in the following positions: Teacher, Director of Human Resources and Chief of Staff. I have thorough knowledge of school district operations: finance/budgeting, school safety protocols, union negotiations, benefit administration, supervision and evaluation and school district policies and procedures. I believe my knowledge of the community and public education will enhance student educational achievement and success.

The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ____, and this is what I intend to do about it:

Cost of living. I am facing the same cost of living issues as my constituents. As a Board of Education member, my job is to be sure every dollar spent by Shelton Public Schools is allocated for specific needs and goals and is appropriately budgeted by the Board of Education in collaboration with the Superintendent and his team. The BOE must ensure to the best of their ability that spending remains on target, recognizing that the financial situation can change. The BOE must then be prepared to adapt the budget accordingly.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

I have a solid educational background, and thorough knowledge of Board procedures. I can hit the ground running. I have worked collaboratively with City of Shelton Administration. I am committed to attending all Board of Education meetings and sub-committee meetings as attendance at meetings is of the utmost importance in doing the Board's work.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

I will advocate for increased funding for the BOE, so Shelton can maintain quality education for all students. I will also support the Superintendent's mission and goals and a supportive work environment for all BOE employees.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

I have been a Director of Human/Chief of Staff since 2002. I have a strong work ethic, a commitment to public education and I have worked diligently throughout my career to foster an atmosphere of professional collaboration with my colleagues and staff at all levels.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Be patient, work hard, listen, set standards and finally laugh a great deal.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

My career was dedicated to the educational, emotional and social development of all students. I hold the sincere belief that all students can learn and be successful provided the necessary opportunities. As a Board of Education member I will advocate strongly for a fully funded school budget, thereby enhancing student educational development. Students will be my focus.
