SHELTON, CT — Police are warning residents of a recent influx of toll fraud scams targeting the Shelton community.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, police said scammers will send residents fake text messages, phone calls or emails claiming they owe unpaid toll fees.

"These messages often contain urgent language and malicious links designed to steal your personal information," police said on Facebook.

Police provided the following tips to help residents stay safe from these types of scams:

  • DO NOT click on any suspicious links in texts or emails.
  • IGNORE phone calls demanding immediate toll payments.
  • VERIFY by checking your toll account directly through the official website.
  • REPORT scam attempts to local authorities and your toll service provider.

Police also noted legitimate toll agencies will never demand payment via text, email or unexpected calls.
