In Derby, Town Clerk Marc Garofalo announced in an email Thursday night a mandatory recount will take place Wednesday due to a close vote for the 10th position on the city's Board of Apportionment and Taxation.
"Pursuant to Section 9-311a and Section 9-445 of the Connecticut General Statutes, a recanvass must be held if difference between the highest vote getter and the next highest vote getter is less than 20 votes," Garofalo said.
According to Garofalo, Republican candidate Ashley Simon received 1,064 votes while Republican candidate Heidi DiGiovanni received 1,058 votes.
"As there is a plurality of less than 20 votes, we must schedule a recanvass (recount)," Garofalo said.
This recount is open to the public and will take place at 11 a.m. in the Aldermanic Chambers at Derby City Hall.
The recanvass will be conducted by the head moderator, Kelly Halligan, with assistance from four other poll workers, as well as Democratic Registrar of Voters Louise Pitney and Republican Registrar of Voters Thomas Lionetti.
Only the results for all the Board of Apportionment and Taxation candidates will be recounted. The entire process is expected to be completed in up to four hours, according to Garofalo.
