Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman chapter engages in National Day of Service

Ladies delivered home-cooked food to female veterans

Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman DAR chapter engaged in the National Day of Service, by delivering a potluck meal to the Madaras Home for Women Veterans on Friday, October 10th. The delicious dishes included casserole, meatloaf, a salad, pumpkin muffins and other home-baked goods.

"Patriotism and service are a big part of the DAR's mission," said chapter regent Deb Heim. "It's a joy to serve these ladies, who have served our nation." The DAR's National Day of Service began in 2014, but chapter members have been serving the Madaras House (formerly Homes for the Brave) since they opened in 2011.

The PFC Nicholas A. Madaras House is Connecticut’s first and only community-based transitional home exclusively for Women Veterans experiencing homelessness and their young children. Since opening in 2011, the program helps Women Veterans by meeting their needs for a safe, secure home, adequate food, and by empowering residents to move forward with obtaining permanent housing, achieving financial stability, and working toward greater self-determination.
