Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman chapter to mark Nero Hawley's grave with special plaque

The public is invited to attend a special ceremony on November 8

Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman chapter will gather on Saturday, November 8 to mark Nero Hawley's grave with a special bronze plaque.

Nero Hawley was born a slave, earned his freedom by taking his owner's place to serve in the Continental Army. He survived the infamous, harsh winter of Valley Forge with General George Washington's troops, and later used his skills to establish his own business. The public is invited to attend this special grave marking ceremony on Saturday, November 8, at 1 pm; light refreshments will be served afterward at the Trumbull Historical Society.

If you are attending, please RSVP by Nov 1 to NeroHawleyDedication@gmail.com. Let us know if you need transportation if you are unable to walk to the Riverside cemetery from parking area. Address is 1856 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull, CT. Guests are asked to please park across the street from Old Mill Road and walk up to Riverside cemetery.

The historic Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman chapter, Inc was founded in 1893. The DAR is a non-profit lineage society, perpetuating the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. Any woman who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution may be eligible to join.
