Our small business series shines a light on local business owners in the community.

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. And that’s the belief behind this exciting series we’ve kicked off at Patch — to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.

I work out of my home. I find its easier to photograph in clients homes. Especially when it comes to newborn shoots. I am also a big fan of outdoor photography. I scout local areas for photography sessions. Especially with the fall season coming. Family shoots with the foliage is a huge request.

Briefly, what business are you in?

Photography

What’s the most difficult moment or challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?

I do not charge a huge amount for my sessions and I also offer the pictures on a disc with rights to print. I feel potential clients look at this as they will not receive professional pictures. Just because I am not charging a huge sitting fee or making you order your pictures through me, it does not mean you will not have a great session.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?

My challenges are my own doing. I tend to take more pictures then necessary and then end up having a hard time narrowing down the shoot.

What’s been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?

Talking my daughter along with me on shoots. She is learning more and more every shoot and I really like her feedback. Also I truly enjoy when a client is happy with my work. To know I was able to capture the moment for them is priceless.

What’s the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?

I recently had to use a stop sign as a prop for a toddler session. Had to come up with ideas of how to incorporate into the shoot. I also have been able to work with a local designer. We can promote each others work. I take the pictures of her product being used in a shoot and she uses them on her site giving me credit .

How do you deal with difficult customers?

With a smile. Patience is key.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?

I am able to work with a local school producing their yearbook. I also work with the yearbook club. I can offer my experience and hopefully, teach the members how to take a great picture.
