Shelton FD Urges Residents To Close Their Bedroom Doors

The Shelton Fire Department urges residents to always close their bedroom door before they go to sleep. Here's why.

SHELTON, CT — The Shelton Fire Department urges residents to always close their bedroom door before they go to sleep for their own safety.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, the department said residents should "close [their doors] before [they] doze," and try to get in the habit of closing all interior doors whenever possible.

The department also provided photos, which can be viewed here, of bedrooms involved in house fires, one of which had its door closed during a blaze.

Fire officials noted "the charring on the hallway side of the door that was closed," and the minimal amount of heat and smoke damage the room received as a result.

In contrast, the room that did not have its door closed suffered "severe heat and smoke damage," officials said.

"By closing the door you drastically reduce the amount of heat, smoke and poisonous gases from entering your room," the post reads. "Closing your doors also slows down fire spread throughout your home and buys you more time to escape."
