Shelton Police Capt. Michael Madden said he will be sworn in as police chief in Paris, Maine on Oct. 1.
His first day will be Oct. 7 and he put in for retirement in Shelton Sept. 6 after 28 years on the job, 25 of them full-time. His retirement party will be Oct. 24 at Molto Bene in Ansonia, possibly with three other department veterans.
"I will greatly miss all the people in Shelton," said Madden, a 49-year-old Shelton native who lived most of his life in his hometown.
Paris has a population of 5,183 according to 2010 U.S. Census figures. It's about five hours, or about 286 miles, from Shelton. Madden said he will be living near the town.
It covers about 41 square miles and is near Portland, a lake, a casino, a speedway and a ski resort. The department has seven sworn officers, while Shelton has 52, Madden said.
According to its Facebook page, "The Paris Police Department is a progressive law enforcement agency serving a population of 5000 in the foothills of Western Maine."
Paris Interim Chief Jerry Hinton said the town gets tourists in the summer, foliage admirers in the fall and skiers in the winter. Many pass through it to get to nearby tourist destinations, he said.
