'Stinky Garbage' is Crippling Local Business

A Shelton small business owner sent us these photographs and said trash is a big problem downtown.

Johnny Addeo, owner of on Center Street in downtown Shelton, sent us these photographs with the accompanying captions on the Shelton Patch Facebook page

"Only on Center Street will you find mounds of stinky garbage all day crippling local businesses on Thursdays," Addeo said on Facebook.

In April, the Board of Aldermen's Street Committee addressed because apartment tenants are putting garbage bags on the curb days before their scheduled collection day. They suggested "a substantial fine" for offenders of a new ordinance concerning garbage pickup.

Also, Shelton Anti-Litter Committee member Anne Kissel submitted in March about her frustration with both the city and fellow residents regarding excessive litter in the Long Hill and Bridgeport Avenue areas.

. Director Paul Dimauro sent out a press release (see attached .pdf) in regards to trash pickup for Memorial Day weekend:

"Due to the MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY there will be no TRASH and RECYCLING collection on Monday May 28, 2012.

Monday’s route will be picked up on Tuesday.

Tuesday through Friday, residents are advised to put their TRASH and RECYCLING out on their normally scheduled day. If it is not picked up on that day, it will be on the following day.

Anything not picked up on Friday will be collected on Saturday.

The Transfer Station and the City Yard will be CLOSED on Monday, May 28, 2012 for the Holiday. They will reopen on Tuesday, May 29, 2012."
