Student Approached By Unknown Man 'Behaving Inappropriately' Near Derby School: Principal
The school's principal said the incident was reported to police after the man approached the student on the school's athletic track.
DERBY, CT — Police were contacted after a Derby High School student was approached by an unknown man "behaving inappropriately" on the school's athletic track Thursday, according to the school's principal.
In a letter sent out to Derby families, Principal Jen Olson said the male student reported being approached by an unknown man around 2:45 p.m. on the school's track near the gate adjacent to the Derby Neck Library.
According to Olson, the man tried to engage the student in conversation and behaved inappropriately.

"The student did the right thing by walking away and reporting it to a trusted adult," Olson said in the letter.
The incident was immediately reported to police, who are actively investigating the incident, according to Olson.

"We will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students and school community," Olson said.
Additional security was provided at the school's athletic fields Friday, according to Olson.
A request for comment from police was not immediately returned Tuesday.
"We encourage families to remind students to report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior immediately to a trusted adult, school staff member or police," Olson said.
