Valley Community Foundation Launches Annual “Valley Gives Back”

Philanthropic Initiative Aims to Help Local Nonprofits

Derby, CT -- The Valley Community Foundation (VCF) is proud to announce the launch of its 7th Annual “Valley Gives Back” campaign. Beginning Saturday (Nov. 1) and running through December, this two-month initiative encourages individuals to celebrate the spirit of gratitude and community by considering a forever gift -- a planned gift in their will, trust, or retirement account -- to the Valley nonprofits and causes they cherish most.

First launched in 2018 by VCF, the Valley Gives Back initiative shines a light on the power of planned giving -- generous acts that do not impact a donor’s current finances but can make a lasting difference for generations to come. Donors are encouraged to explore legacy-giving options such as designating life insurance policies, donating appreciated stock, or giving from their IRA’s required minimum distribution.

In addition to a digital, print and mass mailing marketing campaign to promote the initiative, VCF has once again secured the Valley’s iconic billboard atop the Cohen & Thomas Building in Derby that will spotlight the message and theme: “Give Back To The Valley That Gave You So Much: Leave a Forever Gift to Your Favorite Nonprofit” encouraging commuters at the busy Main Street intersection to reflect on how they can leave a lasting mark on the Valley.

“This year’s theme really speaks to the heart of what the Valley represents,” said Sharon Closius, VCF President and CEO. “Each of us has been touched by this community in some way -- through our schools, churches, local nonprofits, or simply by neighbors who care. ‘Give Back to the Valley That Gave You So Much’ reminds us that legacy gifts are not about wealth -- they’re about gratitude, belonging, and leaving a mark that endures.”

The 2026 campaign once again coincides with National Philanthropy Month in November, combining digital outreach with community engagement efforts. Through ValleyGivesBack.org, VCF offers free resources and guidance for donors and nonprofits alike -- helping people understand how to create or expand their charitable legacy.

VCF Board Chair Nancy Valentine said this year’s message underscores the Valley’s deep tradition of generosity.

“This campaign is about celebrating the kindness that defines who we are as a region,” Valentine said. “When you leave a forever gift -- no matter the size -- you strengthen the future of the Valley for your children, your neighbors, and everyone who calls the Valley home.”

As in past years, local nonprofits are also encouraged to promote the Valley Gives Back initiative through their own websites, social media and communications channels. VCF has shared social media posts and instructions on how they can encourage their supporters to leave a legacy gift directly to their organization without the need for red tape sometimes associated with estate planning.

“Planned giving is one of the most meaningful ways people can express their love for the Valley,” Closius said “When you include your favorite nonprofit in your estate plans, you’re ensuring that the causes that mattered to you in life continue to thrive long after.”
