This Avon Student Is A Presidential Scholar Hopeful

AVON, CT — One of the nation's highest high school academic awards will be given out in June, with semifinalists — including one from Avon — recently named.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has a total of 167 semifinalists from Connecticut, including seven from Simsbury.

Those named semifinalists for the program from Avon are:

• Sreetama Kushari of Avon High School (Avon)

According to the U.S. Presidential Scholars website, the program was established in 1964, by executive order of President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The aim is to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts.

In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.

Each year, up to 161 students are named Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
