SIMSBURY, CT — Thanks to a local explosives and explosives technology manufacturer, the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Co. now has a new eye in the sky.

Dyno Nobel, which is located at 660 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, recently donated funds to the SVFC to purchase an aerial drone for the department.

Last week, firefighters took the drone out for a whirl and, make no mistake, this is no toy.

Namely, firefighters said the drone will be an important rescue tool that has various applications in the field.

"Equipped with a high-definition camera and thermal imaging, this drone can be used at fires, rescues, hazmat incidents, and natural disasters," wrote the SVFC.

"It will serve as a powerful tool in enhancing our situational awareness, giving our crews the ability to see what’s happening in real time from a bird’s-eye view, especially in situations where visibility is limited or dangerous for our personnel on the ground."

Dyno Nobel has long been a part of the Simsbury community.

It specializes in industrial explosives, from the technology to deliver them to the actual explosive materials.

Its products are frequently used in the mining and construction industries.

The SVFC said the company's support of the town is much appreciated.

"We are very appreciative of these community partnerships that help us continue to build our capabilities," wrote the fire department.
