Street Open In Simsbury After Gas Main Rupture: UPDATE

The road closure was expected to last 'several hours,' but the situation was rectified quicker than expected.

SIMSBURY, CT — A gas line ruptured in Simsbury, causing a potentially explosive situation on a busy stretch of road in Simsbury.

But despite initial concerns of a closed roadway for hours, local officials at 12:56 p.m. said the roadway was reopened after about 45 minutes.

Town officials said the gas main ruptured in the area of 1430 Hopmeadow St., resulting in the road (Route 10) being closed.

But that was not the case.

"Thank you to all who were involved in the restoration effort for the gas line rupture on Hopmeadow Street," wrote the Town of Simsbury. "Hopmeadow Street between Hoskins and Wolcott Road is back open earlier than anticipated."

The state Department of Transportation said the situation was caused by construction work in that area, adding the area near Dorset Crossing Drive was also being impacted.

The Simsbury Police Department Thursday afternoon had urged motorists to avoid Route 10 just north of the Big Y supermarket and the International Skating Center of Connecticut.

Police called the incident a "natural gas leak" and said while the road is reopened, some traffic delays remain as utility work in that area is ongoing.
