Gifted Simsbury HS Musician Is A Math Whiz Too

The Simsbury High School junior recently won first place in the 2023 Nutmeg Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition.

SIMSBURY, CT — The state's top classical music orchestra has named a Simsbury High School junior one of the state's top young musicians.

According to the Nutmeg Symphony Orchestra, SHS junior Eli Gold was named the first-place winner in the 2023 Nutmeg Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition

The orchestra said Gold has studied percussion with Dr. Jianpeng Feng at the Hartt School Community Division for nearly eight years and has participated in numerous festivals and competitions.

Gold is the principal percussionist of the Connecticut Youth Symphony (CYS) and Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble (GHYWE), both sponsored by the Hartt Community Division.

He will be featured with GHYWE for a performance of Keiko Abe’s marimba concerto, Prism Rhapsody, in April 2024.

But there is more to Gold than just music, according to orchestra officials

"In addition to percussion, Eli is also a passionate mathematician," the orchestra said.

In fact, Gold has taken numerous advanced math courses and is currently studying graduate-level Algebraic Number Theory with Dr. Jeremy Teitelbaum at the University of Connecticut.

Gold, even, began teaching math managing math enrichment at his school, and teaching live classes to middle school students across the world as part of the LIVE program, an initiative by esteemed mathematician Po-Shen Loh.
