Letter to the Editor: John Hampton for State Representative

Send Simsbury Patch letters to the editor to jeff.brush@patch.com.

John Hampton has shown Simsbury residents time and again why he deserves their vote this fall to serve as State Representative for the 16th District. During John’s impressive tenure in town government, Simsbury has become a more energy-efficient, vibrant, and attractive place to live. Town schools have remained strong, our library and recreational facilities are outstanding, and John has been a terrific steward of open-space lands. John has worked hard to ensure these improvements occurred thoughtfully and frugally. He engages residents with openness and concern, and he has a knack for getting beyond partisan politics.

As a Deputy-First Selectman and Selectman, John’s accomplishments stand out because they often occurred in the face of substantial adversity. As Chair of the town’s Public Safety Commission, John worked tirelessly during last October’s freak snowstorm. I spotted John repeatedly in the storm’s aftermath: at Simsbury High School overseeing the shelter established there, working alongside cleanup crews on town roads, and at town hall. John’s response to the storm exemplifies his tireless commitment.

That commitment through adversity is illustrated over the long term by John’s implementation of a positive vision for Simsbury despite a down economy, state budget cuts, and increasing bitterness in politics at all levels. At a moment when criticism and name-calling permeates our political culture, John’s civility and public spiritedness is more important than ever. It is always difficult to articulate and implement a larger vision in public life. John’s vision for Simsbury has taken shape, despite current trends. The town’s economic, civic, educational, and recreational facilities have never been stronger.

I look forward to seeing John’s vision and energy put to work on the legislative stage in Hartford. I am asking fellow residents to join me in voting for John Hampton this fall.
