SIMSBURY, CT — School officials have done what they need to do to ensure one of the town's elementary schools will get a new and modernized roof.

At last month's Simsbury Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously approved three motions that will get a $921,437 roof project done at Tootin' Hills Elementary School.

Tootin Hills is a K-6 elementary school located at 25 Nimirod Road, West Simsbury.

The three votes did the following regarding the roof replacement project:

• Approved final plans and the project manual for the roof job, as prepared by Jacunski Humes Architects out of Berlin.

That same firm oversaw the design of the new roof at Simsbury's Center School, a pre-K through grade eight school.

• Approved the final roof project cost estimate of $921,437.

• Approved Simsbury Superintendent of Schools Matthew T. Curtis and Simsbury Board of Education Chairman Jeff Tindall to sign the necessary state documents to get the project reviews by the state Department of Administrative Services.

The final step is a necessary precursor for any available state reimbursements that might recoup some or most of the project for Simsbury taxpayers.

Work to replace the roof at the school is expected to take place over the summer.

Jason Casey, Simsbury Public Schools' director of infrastructure and technology, told school board members on March 25 that the school system is ready to begin work once school is out of session, but board action was required.

"We're on track for our Tootin' Hills partial roof replacement coming this summer," Casey said.

Board members quickly approved the three motions with minimal discussion.
