It’s been an unforgettable year for the Simsbury High School rugby team, a program that’s proving hard work, humility, and hunger can take you to incredible heights—on both sides of the Atlantic.
This spring, the Trojans embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime international tour to Portugal, where they competed in an elite-level tournament in Lisbon. The players not only represented Simsbury and Connecticut with pride, but also gained invaluable experience playing against top international youth talent.

That momentum carried back to U.S. soil, where Simsbury stormed through the 1AA North Division with an undefeated record. Signature wins over traditional powerhouses like Southington and the 2024 1AA State Champions West Hartford Co-Op solidified their dominance and earned the squad a coveted spot in the upcoming State Championship game.

Simsbury will face their final challenge this Saturday, June 7th, at Ridgefield High School, with hopes of capping off their dream season with a state title.
Head Coach Ed Matteo praised the team’s relentless work ethic and unity: “These guys have stayed humble and hungry all year. Whether we were playing in Lisbon or on a rainy night in Connecticut, they’ve played for each other. That’s what’s made the difference.”

The Simsbury High School Boys team's last trip to the state championship was in 2017 with a hard fought loss to Nationally ranked Greenwich High School.

With eyes now on the championship, Simsbury looks to bring the same intensity and class that has defined their season. Win or lose, they’ve already made history—and their community couldn’t be prouder.
