Simsbury High Girls Rugby Team Takes Home State Title
The team won its first state championship on Sunday, May 26.
The SHS girls rugby team earned its first state championship title on May 26, according to a release sent to Simsbury Patch.
Simsbury battled with Cheshire to take home the title, with an ending score of 31-22.
Coach Denis Horrigan commended the team for its vast improvement over the season.
"The way this team improved from pre-season training in January to this past weekend is incredible," he said. "We had great contributions from the seniors, especially Mackenzie Katz and Brianna Serio. But we are a very young and extremely talented team that will continue to do great things! The freshman and sophomore classes are the deepest I have seen in all of my years coaching rugby. I think that being a varsity sport at the high school has improved our recruiting.”
Many Simsbury rugby players will be continuing the season and trying out for the Connecticut All-Star team in the next few weeks.
