Simsbury Issues Heat Warnings For Residents

Town urges folks to check on elderly, stay hydrated and go to the library if they need a respite from the heat wave.

SIMSBURY, CT — Mid-90s temperatures expected Tuesday through the weekend has Simsbury town officials issuing warnings and urging folks to visit the library if they need a break.

The Town of Simsbury and the Department of Community and Social Services issued information Monday to residents of the best practices to stay cool.

• Try to stay inside where it is cool and utilize fans and air conditioning when available.

• Keep shades or curtains closed during the day to keep your house/apartment cooler.

• Should people need respite from the heat, the Simsbury Public Library, 75 Hopmeadow St., is open during normal business hours.

Those hours are Monday through Thursday (9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.), Friday (9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.), Saturday (9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and closed on Sunday.

• For those who must be outside, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure to the extent possible.

Early mornings and evenings are the best times to be outside, so plan your day accordingly, town officials said.

"We encourage you to take advantage of the many open spaces Simsbury has to offer," Simsbury officials said via a statement via social media. "Suggested open spaces include the pavilions at Town Forest, Tariffville Park and Hop Brook Landing (the Flower Bridge), and taking advantage of places with good tree canopies such as the trails in the Ethel Walker Woods and state parks located in town."

Town officials also urged folks to look out for each other, especially elderly family members and neighbors and people should never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle.
