Bridge Closure Announced By Southbury Officials

The timeline for the project which begins in May has been released by local officials.

The Town of Southbury is announcing that the one-lane Poverty Road Bridge over the Pomperaug River will be temporarily closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic beginning May 8.

Information via the town of Southbury:

The Town of Southbury is announcing that the one-lane Poverty Road Bridge over the Pomperaug River will be temporarily closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic beginning May 8, 2023, for approximately 3 to 5 days. The bridge will be closed only during the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM each day.

A contractor will be undertaking coring work near the bridge as part of the design phase for possible replacement. This work is preliminary only, and a decision has not yet been made regarding a future change in traffic pattern on the bridge. Construction on the bridge would not begin until 2025 or 2026.

Please be mindful of workers near the site, and follow the temporary detour, shown below. Signs will also be posted on the road to indicate the detour route. Ewald Park will remain open while the work is underway.
