Buh-Bye, Big Blue? IBM To Shutter Southbury Offices: Report

IBM will close up shop at its 230-acre Southbury campus next month, according to published reports.

SOUTHBURY, CT — Tech leviathan IBM is pulling out of Southbury, according to multiple reports.

The multinational technology corporation headquartered in Armonk, NY with a presence in over 175 countries will be operating out of one less office building when it shutters its 1.1 million-square-foot 150 Kettletown Road site on Jan. 26, according to Hartford Business Journal.

The move comes as part of a corporation-wide office space consolidation, and will not result in the elimination of any jobs. Positions will be re-assigned to nearby facilities in Poughkeepsie and Armonk, NY, or allowed to telecommute, depending on their responsibilities, the HBJ report said.

Still, it's a very big deal: IBM is Southbury’s largest taxpayer. Its 230-acre campus had once been home to nearly 2,500 workers, although most recently the headcount was closer to 1,100, according to the Connecticut Post.

In 2015, state Rep. Arthur O'Neill, who fronts Southbury in Hartford, told Hearst the tech giant had complained to him that the state's tax climate was making it "difficult for them to operate in Connecticut."
