Friends of Pomperaug Music Award Scholarships to Pomperaug High School Seniors

Celebrating Dedication and Talent: Friends of Pomperaug Music Awards D'Angelo and Linda Hughes Scholarships

Last Thursday evening, during Pomperaug High School's awards and scholarship night, Friends of Pomperaug Music, Inc. (FoPM) awarded music scholarships to seven deserving PHS seniors.
Mikayla Tuck received the D'Angelo Music Scholarship. Established in 2001 and named after beloved music teacher Robert D'Angelo, this scholarship is for students majoring in music (including education, performance, composition, recording, or the music industry). It recognizes those who demonstrate a positive, loyal, and supportive attitude, and who consistently go above and beyond in contributing to the PHS Music Department's spirit.
The Linda Hughes Music Scholarship was awarded to Addison Batoon, Stevie Bennett, Ethan Hocking, Sophia Ltaif, Henry Marks, and Katherine Vongsouvanh. Created in 2023 by FoPM's current board members, this scholarship honors graduating seniors who, while not necessarily majoring in music, have shown commitment and dedication to music throughout their time at PHS. It is named after Linda Hughes, who taught music for 38 years in Region 15, recognizing her tireless work and support for countless students.

Friends of Pomperaug Music, Inc. is a Connecticut 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1999 by Thom Thorndike, Kevin Kauffman and Tim Richards. They were concerned parents of Region 15 music students, who had the simple goal of providing opportunities for students to succeed through continuous excellence in music education.

The current board, led by President Chrissie McKeown, Treasurer Joe Salsbury, and Secretary Melissa Abramo, plan to continue these annual music scholarships and aim to create even more opportunities for PHS's talented music students.
