Region 15 Elementary Schools Compete for Book Bowl Title
The 3rd Annual Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl competition was held at the Southbury Library.

From Pomperaug Regional School District 15: The 3rd Annual Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl competition was held at the Southbury Library on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. Winning teams representing Region 15’s four elementary schools competed against each other to answer questions about the ten 2017 Intermediate Nutmeg Book Award nominees. Nathaniel Ortiz (team captain), Elizabeth Levins, Jesmari Perdicho, Owen Barstrom, and Vincent Kuo represented Gainfield Elementary School as members of team “Anonymous” to win the 2017 Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl.
Competitions at the school level determined teams that would represent their school at the district-wide competition. Nicollette Chu, Cole Dixon, Rachel Adami, Emma Coelho, and Evelyn Chun (team captain) represented “The Rocking Readers” from Long Meadow Elementary School; Kate Kennon, Emma Kulla, Amelia Remo, Ciran Flanagan (team captain), Ryan Dawes, and Kalman Zold represented “The Book Battlers” from Middlebury Elementary School; and Alyssa Friedman (team captain), Madelyn Zinzi, Benjamin Schiron, Anika Scherer, and Gabrielle Leonardi represented team “Anonymi Platypi” from Pomperaug Elementary School.
“Our goal is to foster a love of reading and to embrace our reading initiatives in a fun, educational way. It is an opportunity for the elementary schools to continue to collaborate to celebrate reading,” said Christine Parker, Gainfield Elementary School Media Specialist.

This event is a collaboration among the four Region 15 elementary school library media specialists: Christina O’Neil (Long Meadow Elementary School), Stephanie Robinson (Middlebury Elementary School), Kristyn Mastropietro (Pomperaug Elementary School) and Christine Parker (Gainfield Elementary School); Southbury Public Library’s staff: Joan Stokes (Head Children’s Librarian), Heather Aronson (Teen Department), Katherine Mostacero (Reference Department) and Elizabeth Kelly (Reference Department); and Fifth Grade teachers at each of Region 15’s elementary schools.
"The Nutmeg Book Bowl is a perfect example of the great things that can take place when the schools and public libraries work together so beautifully - and our kids are the ones who benefit from this collaboration. To be in a district in which the parents and educators foster a strong love of reading will benefit our children for a lifetime,” said Joan Stokes, Head Librarian, Children’s Department, Southbury Public Library.
