Genealogy society program examines causes of death in family records

"Drama, Disease, and Death – a Look at How Our Ancestors Died" will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 22 by the Southington Genealogical Society

SOUTHINGTON – Examining death records can provide important clues for people researching family genealogy. However, causes of death can also be another mystery especially when old words such as “consumption” are used.

Just in time for Halloween, “Drama, Disease, and Death – a Look at How Our Ancestors Died” will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 22 by the Southington Genealogical Society. The 7 p.m. program, led by Laureen Galayda, SGS secretary, will cover the causes of death found in historical documents and what the terms mean – including “consumption” which is now known as “tuberculosis.” The meeting will be held at the Southington Historical Society, 239 Main St. The public is welcome to this free event. A Zoom option may be offered.

The Southington Genealogical Society Inc., founded in 1984, is a non-profit organization located in central Connecticut that promotes the accurate recording, research and preservation of family history. The organization meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the historical society. To receive the Zoom link for the virtual programs, email southingtongenealogicalsociety@gmail.com.
