Highway Road Closures Expected In Southington For Wrong-Way Notification System

Work on the multi-day state project begins Monday night, June 23.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A key highway in Southington is getting a much-needed, wrong-way notification system starting Monday, June 23, and continuing through Thursday, June 26.

The state Department of Transportation is installing a wrong-way detection activation system on Interstate 84 West at Exit 30 in Southington.

"The wrong-way detection system uses video cameras to detect vehicles that are traveling in the wrong direction," wrote the DOT in an announcement.

"If a vehicle is detected, wrong-way signs outlined with multiple sets of red lights are activated and begin flashing to alert the driver they are traveling in the wrong direction."

The system also alerts the DOT highway operations center and state police in real time.

Because of the project, being conducted by state-hired contractors, motorists can expect some road and lane closures starting Monday, June 23.

State officials said traffic will be detoured to Exit 28 (Route 322) and then detoured back onto I-84.

A night project, the job will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Monday to Friday, state officials said.

The project timeline is tentative and is subject to weather and other delays.
