SOUTHINGTON, CT — The local school board's second-in-command has resigned from the Southington Board of Education, effective last month.

Republican Southington Board of Education Vice Chairman Jasper Williams announced his resignation from the town's policy-making education board, citing "professional commitments" associated with a new job.

The school board officially accepted Williams' resignation at its last meeting on Aug. 21.

"Over the course of my tenure, I have been humbled by the trust placed in me and proud of the work we have accomplished together on behalf of the students, families, and staff of Southington Public Schools," Williams wrote.

"Every decision I made was guided by a commitment to integrity, accountability, and the belief that our students deserve the very best opportunities to succeed."'

He also thanked fellow board members and school staff members.

"The challenges we faced were many, but the dedication of this community to its children never wavered," Williams wrote.

Board members officially said goodbye to Williams at last month's meeting and wished him well. The kudos came from both sides of the political aisle.

"It's been a pleasure serving with you. I don't always agree, and it's great to not always agree because we have spirited discussions, spirited conversations, and we come to a conclusion," said Democratic school board member Zaya Oshana.

"What I'll say about you is you're a gentleman. You're respectful. You've done this for the right reasons, and you can't say that about every person who runs for office."

"You served with dignity and honor, and thank you for your service," added Democratic school board member Bob Brown.

Republican Southington Board of Education Chairperson Colleen Clark bid an emotional adieu to Williams.

"I am incredibly sad to have to recognize and thank our vice chairman, Jasper Williams, for his service on our board," Clark said, reading a statement at the meeting. "While I am excited for you and your new job opportunity, I am going to miss you not sitting here right next to me."

"From the moment you've been elected, you have been committed to doing what's best for our students, our staff, our community," she said.

"Jasper, it's been an honor where the Southington community is truly in your debt," said Republican school board member Sean Carson.
