Labor Day In Southington, What's Closed?

Monday, Sept. 1, is Labor Day, with people being treated to one last long weekend of summer.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — With summer's unofficial end coming this weekend, folks have one more day of relaxation on Monday, Sept. 1, Labor Day.

And, because of that, the Town of Southington has announced impacts to municipal services due to the holiday. Among them:

• Southington Town Hall and all municipal offices are closed on Monday for the holiday. They will reopen as normal on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

• The Southington Public Library is closed on Monday, but book drop-off and digital resources will still be available. The library reopens as normal at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

"While we’re closed, you may still drop off items in our book drop or use the library catalog to place holds, check your library card, or renew items," wrote the library.

Digital resources also remain accessible through southingtonlibrary.org

• Southington Public Schools are closed on Monday, Sept. 1, and will reopen the following day on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September.

It is an "annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers," wrote federal authorities.

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," wrote federal officials.
