SOUTHINGTON, CT — Staff at a Southington elementary school on Wednesday had to scramble a bit when a pill capsule laced with potent fentanylwas found just outside on the sidewalk.

"Once we were notified, PE classes stayed inside, and a Southington Police drug sniffing K-9 conducted a search of the hallways and grounds of Kelley School."

Nothing further was found, Kahl said in the letter on Wednesday.

Kahl urged families of pupils to use the situation as a teaching tool, especially when it comes to safety.

"Please take time this evening and have a conversation with your child(ren) pertaining to the critical importance to never touch a pill or capsule found anywhere," Kahl wrote to parents.

Kahl said children who see such items should notify an adult immediately.

"It is sad that conversations such as this need to occur, and today is a stark reminder that we are not insulated from such threats," she wrote.
