The Southington Blue Knights Football Twitter page posted a notice on Feb. 20 that Drury, who was an assistant on his son Mike Drury's SHS football squad since retiring as a head coach himself in 2011, had died.
According to the Hartford Courant, Drury was killed in a car accident in Newburgh, N.Y. — a town located north of New York City at the intersection of Interstates 84 and 87 a bit upstate — on Tuesday morning.
"The BKF Family and Football community has suffered a terrible loss today," reads a statement on the team's "X" (formerly Twitter) page. "Coach Chuck was a great coach, leader, mentor, and most of all great person. We will miss him terribly. Please keep the Drury family in your thoughts and prayers."
According to the Courant, Drury, 77, retired from being head coach in 2011 at Pomperaug High School in Southbury, a regional school district that also serves Middlebury.
He went on to be an assistant on his son Mike Drury's staff at Southington High School, helping to lead that program into becoming a state high school football powerhouse, winning state titles in 2013 and 2014.
SHS lost in the state CIAC playoffs last December, marking an end to the Drury dynasty.
Mike Drury, a Bristol resident, stepped down from the head coaching job at SHS in December to spend more time with his family.
Chuck Drury's death comes as SHS athletics continues to mourn the loss of assistant girls basketball coach Bill Queen, who died suddenly last month after a practice.
