Southington To Open Shelter From The Cold

For those who need to keep warm, the shelter will be available starting Friday through Monday.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Expected cold weather after a nasty rain/wind storm blows through Thursday into Friday has prompted the town to activate its cold-weather emergency shelter.

As a result, the Southington Police Department at 69 Lazy Lane, Southington, will be available for folks who may need to keep warm should they need to.

A memo announcing the situation was issued Thursday afternoon by the town.

According to Southington Emergency Management Coordinator Jay Baker, Gov. Ned Lamont has approved activation of the state's cold-weather protocols from 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, to noon on Monday, Dec. 26.

As a result, Southington will have its cold-weather shelter in place during that time period, he said.

"The reason for the activation is a period of intense cold in Connecticut, resulting in wind chill values in the single digits or below over the next several nights," Baker wrote in a memo to Southington Town Manager Mark Sciota.
