The Stamford Public Schools Board passed Tuesday night a $245,072,959 budget which amounts to a 3.53-percent increase over last year. The 1,994.4-position budget amounts to $1,278,725 in cuts from the initial presentation following recommendations from the city's Board of Finance and Board of Representatives, according to board member Jerry Pia. Five staff positions were cut, two teaching positions from Stamford High School, two from Westhill High School and one from Cloonan. Six teacher assistants were added and five elementary school assistant principal positions saw increased days. A behavioral therapist, therapeutic specialist and parent facilitators were also added. "Superintendent Dr. Winifred Hamilton and her staff and all the members of the Fiscal Committee of the board really did a great job," Pia said. "This plan was a culmination of several months of hard work and a public hearing that allowed the members to take in everything the public had to say. I'm happy with it and think we got a lot of things in. The mental health additions are big, they're really going to help the education of children in the City of Stamford."
