Orlando Montalvo was born on February 21, 1958, in Puerto Rico. His early life was marked by a passion for boxing, which he discovered as a means to channel his youthful energy and resolve conflicts. This discipline soon transformed into a lifelong commitment to the sport.

🥇 Amateur Success and Olympic Glory
Montalvo's amateur career was distinguished by an impressive record of 110 wins out of 125 matches. His dedication culminated in a bronze medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. In 1977 he won another bronze medal at the Pan-American Games in Panama, representing Puerto Rico on the world stage. These achievements not only brought him personal acclaim but also elevated Puerto Rican boxing internationally.
🥊 Professional Career Highlights
Transitioning to professional boxing, Montalvo competed in 29 bouts, securing 22 victories, including 18 by knockout. His prowess in the ring earned him a ranking as the No. 10 junior middleweight contender globally. Notable matches included bouts against opponents like John David Jackson, Carl Riskus, Billy Costello and as well as Kevin Rooney. To prepare for these amazing bouts he trained and sparred with boxing legends such as Wilfredo Benitez, “Mano de Piedra” Roberto Duran, and Sugar Ray Leonard.
🏅 Community Impact and Hall of Fame Induction
Orlando Montalvo relocated to Stamford, Connecticut during his professional career in 1980. He and his longtime wife, Sandra, of 45 years, established Montalvo's Boxing Gym in 1981. Initially, they trained youth in local parks, backyards, basements, local community centers, and at Union Memorial Church in Stamford. After retiring from professional boxing in 1988 over the years, their gym had become a cornerstone of the community, offering training to individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
Montalvo's contributions to boxing and his community were formally recognized when he was inducted into the 2003 Massachusetts Boxing Hall of Fame and the 2016 Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2012 his hometown of San Sebastián, Puerto Rico named a community boxing gym after him for his success. Reflecting on the honor, he expressed tremendous pride in the recognition, his career and the support of his family.
