STAMFORD, CT — Following the announcement of the impending departure of Superintendent of Stamford Public Schools Dr. Tamu Lucero at the end of the 2026 school year, Stamford Board of Education President Michael Hyman has provided some clarity on the next steps to find a permanent replacement.

The BoE is now responsible for recruiting, selecting, and hiring the next superintendent.

"I want to make clear that it is the Board’s current intention to have Superintendent Lucero fulfill the terms of her contract," Hyman said in a prepared statement. "This will give the Board the time and space to focus on a thorough, comprehensive, and professional search for a new superintendent without the disruption or added expense of an interim appointment."

Hyman said the superintendent search process "will begin in the next few weeks."

The first step in the process will be to create an ad hoc superintendent search committee that will be charged with identifying a professional search firm that will handle the recruitment and selection process, Hyman said.

School board members will work with the firm to develop a timeline for the search process, Hyman said, "which must include opportunities for all constituencies to provide input about the qualities they want to see in the next superintendent."

Updates and information will be posted on the BoE website and shared during the board's Labor Committee and regular monthly meetings, according to Hyman.

Lucero, who joined SPS in 2013, was named superintendent in April 2019. Hyman said Lucero "has led Stamford Public Schools with vision, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is in the best interests of all students."

Hyman highlighted several of Lucero's accomplishments, such as the opening of Strawberry Hill School, coordinating of the district's response to a recent mold crisis, helping to secure funding for new school construction, holding a long overdue curriculum audit, and establishing a master staffing plan.

"This is a time of great promise and opportunity for our Stamford Public Schools. If we are to assure the continuation of meaningful progress within our schools, it will require a relentless effort by all of us to listen to one another and to clearly define and agree upon our priorities for our schools, and the leadership values we seek in the next superintendent," Hyman added. "As we begin the search for the next superintendent, let us keep that focus in mind as we identify the best candidate to lead our district forward."

Lucero is closing out the second year of a three-year contract. Last October, the Stamford Board of Education was unable to come to an agreement on an extension for Lucero, and a vote has not been held since.

Her current deal expires on June 30, 2026. Effective July 1, 2026, Lucero will serve as the director and head of school at a private, PreK-12 international school in Africa.
