LEGO Drive for Stamford YMCA'S After School Program

Donations of LEGOs are being accepted through the end of November.

The Stamford Family YMCA is holding a community LEGO Drive during the month of November, to benefit the Y’s LEAD Academy After School Program that serves children in grades K – 5.

The Y offers children academic enrichment, basic math and reading skill development, and tutoring. Fitness, nutrition, swim lessons and recreation opportunities are integrated into the daily program.

According to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization, 15.1 million U.S. children are left unsupervised after 3 p.m. during the school year. Studies show participation in afterschool programs helps boost school attendance and academic performance and reduces gaps in academic achievement among children from disadvantaged households. Providing youth with opportunities to continue to learn and engage in meaningful activities at the end of the school day can boost their academic success. To help motivate and inspire kids to learn, the Stamford Family YMCA offers the LEAD Academy afterschool program to school-aged children throughout the Stamford community.

The LEGO Drive will directly support the Stamford Y’s after school program. LEGOs teach kids to think in three dimensions, improves literacy as kids work with instructions, develops problem-solving, organization and planning by construction, and improves creativity and critical thinking. To donate your LEGOs (mixed up or in sets) simply put in a plastic bag or box, and drop them off at the Stamford YMCA. Drop off boxes are located in the lobby of the Stamford Family YMCA.
