In Memoriam: Anthony W. Kolenda

The lifelong Stamford resident passed away Feb. 1 at the age of 88.

Anthony W. Kolenda, lifelong resident of Stamford, passed away at Stamford Hospital on Monday, February 1, 2016 with his family at his side. He was 88.

Anthony was born October 12, 1927, and was one of four children born to the late Anton and Genevieve (Kuzma) Kolenda.

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Phyllis (D’Elia) Kolenda, his children; Stephen A. Kolenda and his wife Diane, Janice R. Burke and Anne Marie Ferrara and her husband Christopher, his grandchildren; Frank Burke III, Kathlyn Kolenda, Margo Kolenda, Christopher Ferrara, Jr., Mitchell Ferrara and Brendan Ferrara; a sister, Frances Gill and a sister-in-law, Theresa Kolenda.

In addition to his parents, Anthony was preceded in death by two brothers; Chester and Walter Kolenda, a brother-in-law; Edward Gill, a sister-in-law; Cecilia Kolenda, and a son-in-law, Frank J. Burke, Jr.

He attended Stamford schools and began working part time at the railroad while he was in high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1945 to 1948. Upon returning home from the service he returned to work at the railroad and enjoyed a 46-year career until his retirement from Metro North Railroad in 1990. When he wasn’t working Anthony enjoyed boating on Long Island Sound, fishing, gardening, and his many trips with Phyllis to their condo in Florida.

The Kolenda family will receive the sympathy and condolences of friends and family on the evening of Wednesday, February 3, from 4 to to 8 p.m. at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 4, at St. Benedict R.C. Church, 1 St. Benedict Circle, Stamford. The interment will immediately follow mass at St. John R.C. Cemetery in Darien.
