In Memoriam: Joseph J. Nosal

Joseph J. Nosal, 98, passed away October 28, 2015, after a series of hospitalizations at Western Rehabilitation Care Center in Danbury.

A lifelong Stamfordite, he was born May 17, 1917, the son of the late Joseph M. and Mary Lichota Nosal. An American history buff, he was awarded the DAR’s American History Prize during his senior year at Stamford High School in 1934, and continued his interest, serving several terms as President of the Stamford Historical Society.

Though only in his teens, and not yet old enough to vote, he took to the stump at rallies, making speeches on behalf of FDR for his first term, for Alfred N. Phillips, Jr. for Mayor of Stamford in the early 30s, and finally for himself, as one the last selectmen of the Town of Stamford, after consolidation, just before the elimination of the position. He was also a Justice of the Peace at his passing. He continued his education with breaks during the Great Depression and WWII, earning a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University.

Joseph spent the bulk of his business life as a licensed insurance counselor and broker in Stamford and New York City; was a tax preparer and, for lack of a better term, a “facilitator”, who helped many, often overwhelmed by the maze of business and government regulations and systems, often unable to express themselves because of complexity or language barriers by directing them to appropriate specialists, the right bureau, or serving as an interpreter or translator.

In addition to the Historical Society, Joseph had been a life member of the St. Augustine Council, #41 and Lafayette Assembly of Knights of Columbus, and held memberships in the Polish National Alliance, Polish Roman Catholic Union, and Polish Falcons of America, and had been a director of the Polish United Club of Port Chester. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of the Polish National Alliance.

Joseph is survived by his brother, Daniel; a host of nephews and nieces, including Stephen and Mark Nosal; Francis, John and James Tropsa and their sister, Marylin Furtak; and Marianne Nosal Bowen, Alexandra (Nosal) Grasso and Thaddeus Nosal.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Charles (Halina); a sister, Eleanor (Frank) Nosal Tropsa; and niece, Donna Tropsa Briska.

Family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, November 21st from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, in Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, November 23rd at the Holy Name of Jesus Church, 325 Washington Blvd., in Stamford. His interment will follow to Fairfield Memorial Park, 230 Oaklawn Ave, in Stamford.

The family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to the Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., in Stamford, CT.
