STAMFORD, CT — Several businesses in Stamford were cited recently in compliance checks and accused of selling alcohol to a minor, according to police.

Officers in the Stamford Police Department's Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad worked with officials in the CT Liquor Control Division to conduct compliance checks at 32 retail businesses around the city on Aug. 28.

Of the 32 businesses, five of them sold alcohol to a minor who was working with authorities on the checks, Assistant Stamford Police Chief Richard Conklin said.

"This was quite an undertaking, inspecting 32 locations at one time," Conklin said. "This started in the afternoon and went through the evening hours at these different locations."

According to police, the five businesses that were cited are:

  • Star Grocery - 114 West Broad St.
  • Chiquita's Grocery Store - 20 Adams Ave.
  • Bacchu Liquors - 268-270 Greenwich Ave.

Conklin said the businesses were sanctioned "administratively," rather than being charged criminally.

"The strategy we're using, the liquor commission can very quickly cite the location and perhaps suspend their liquor license and issue fines and not have to wait for a criminal case to run itself through court," Conklin explained.

Sanctions will vary, as the CT Liquor Commission will examine past history and if there were any previous violations or suspensions, Conklin noted.
