Two dogs were locked in cars last week, according to Stamford Animal Care & Control Shelter officials, and with these incidents comes a renewed warning never to leave a pet locked in a vehicle.
According to Officer Stendhal Jean-Louis, twice he had to wait for owners to issue penalties for leaving a pet in a locked vehicle last week.
On Wednesday, a dog was locked in a car at the Ridgeway Shopping Center at approximately 4 p.m. On Thursday, a dog was locked in a car on Knapp Street.
Jean-Louis warned that, though temperatures might dip as September gives way to cooler fall weather and owners might feel it's ok to leave a pet inside a vehicle, this should never occur. Temperatures fluctuate quickly inside a vehicle and even though it might be cooler outside, it can still be a difficult environment for an animal to breathe comfortably.
"You should never leave your dog locked in a car," he said. "Left unattended, it can become too hot or too cold for a pet very quickly."
