STAMFORD, CT — Pitney Bowes, the global shipping and mailing company based in Stamford, will lay off nearly 1,000 employees across the United States, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notices.

The company on Aug. 8 announced it sold its Global Ecommerce (GEC) segment to Hilco Commercial Industrial, which will lead a wind-down of that segment’s operations.

In a news release from earlier this month, Pitney Bowes said GEC "had been struggling to achieve profitability over the past several years in the face of macroeconomic and industry headwinds."

In a Q2 earnings call on Aug. 8, the day the GEC sale was announced, Pitney Bowes Interim CEO Lance Rosenzweig expressed gratitude toward GEC employees.

"Their hard work is deeply appreciated and this decision to wind down the business is in no way reflective of their performance," Rozenzweig said, according to a transcript of the call. "We understand the impact of this decision on all involved. But after years of unsustainable losses, these changes are essential to preserving the company as a whole and positioning the remaining business segments for future growth. We are providing severance payments and outplacement services to the GEC team to ease their transition."

Pitney Bowes is headquartered at 3001 Summer St. in Stamford.
