Stamford Convent Demolition OK'd

The proposed demolition of the building to make way for an expanded Rogers Magnet School campus has been approved by a city committee.

A Stamford Board of Representatives committee has approved the razing of a former convent building on the campus Rogers Magnet Elementary school.

The planned demolition at the future site of the school passed muster Tuesday night with the Board of Representatives’ Land Use Committee that unanimously approved demolition of the old Sisters of St. Joseph convent building at 200 Strawberry Hill Ave., according to The Advocate.

The building — erected in 1964 —is located in front of the former Sacred Heart Academy that is now scheduled to open in September as part of a planned extension of Rogers Magnet Elementary.

City officials said it is not cost effective to retrofit the building’s rooms to accommodate the size needed for news classrooms, according to the report.

About 1,000 students in grades kindergarten through eighth-grade are expected to attend the new school.
