Stamford Man Charged With Impersonating Police Officer: New Canaan PD

STAMFORD, CT — A Stamford man is accused of impersonating a police officer after being stopped in New Canaan over the weekend, according to New Canaan police.

In an arrest log provided by the New Canaan Police Department, police said an officer on routine patrol Saturday stopped Stephane Smarth, 40, of Stamford, around 4:30 p.m. in the area of Morse Court due to an obstructed registration plate.

According to police, Smarth displayed a Stamford police officer badge and said he used to be a cop in Stamford and was in the process of transferring.

Smarth was arrested after further investigation revealed he was no longer employed by the Stamford Police Department, police said.

Smarth was charged with impersonation of a police officer and released on a promise to appear in court later this month, according to police.
